After looking at this I wasn't exactly surprised, however I was disappointed knowing that League of Legends is now on par with sports like those listed in the tweet. Playing dod I don't really have a right to say that League of Legends isn't challenging enough or the skill cap is high enough to be referred to as a sport on par with the traditional major league sports, but I was curious to know what you guys thought. Players getting their own visa's is cool and i think is great for competitive gaming in the future, just thought i'd share and see what you guys had to say.

You cant blame Riot for their somewhat shitty community but the company they have established is great! I am a Leaguer only because I was really bad at Dota so i dodged it completely and I have to say that Riot really makes its community heard and they listen to all "pros" on how to adjust the game. Simply put the game is popular because the company that made it took the time to understand how a successful competitive gaming world would work.

No, the game is popular because the company took the time to understand how a successful pub game works. Just like Call of Duty.nunz wrote:You cant blame Riot for their somewhat shitty community but the company they have established is great! yeah, its interesting to see what Riot has done for the game. The viewers on twitch for league is almost never sub 40k. That attention when received looks great from an outsider's point of view. However like you said the community at times isn't the best even in the slightest which doesn't necessarily matter to sponsors who support the game, leaving that factor void. While the next games on the most viewed list - being dota 2 and sc2 are great in themselves, they are only a shadow of league of legend's viewer power even when there is a big tournament for either of the previously mentioned two going on. I am curious to see if this affects other game communities and will eventually become a common theme throughout all games. I almost wonder if the result of such a change was due to the popularity of league or was done behind closed doors. I can see either scenario being very probable but that's just my skepticism.

I disagree, on so many aspects the game does not even come close to how sad of a community COD has. Cod also pays 0 to no attention to competitive aspect of the game, most guns have controllable recoil to the point where all you need to do is spray hard down your iron sight. There are no 'plays' in games like that no 'nice shots' and really 0 elements of team play. I do not find LOL to be a pub game at all. It took a fairly long time to understand certain elements of the game and really figure out how all the champions work. They have made team composition a big deal in the way you team fight and lane. They actively add new items/champions/elements to the game so its refreshing. I just think comparing COD and LOL is completely unjust.scorch- wrote:No, the game is popular because the company took the time to understand how a successful pub game works. Didn't Chu quit hon for like a year, play LoL for a month and was immediately a top ranked player? Isn't that a thing that actually happened?

COD : Counter-Strike/Quake :: LoL : DotA
That is why I'm equating LoL and CoD. Since you only play LoL and not DotA, it's not worth writing out all the different reasons, but suffice it to say that the game designers have a game structure in mind, they build items and heroes to support that game structure, and players are forced to play along with that structure if they want to win.
LoL is the easiest game in its genre. It's a game for people who want to play an fps-style game with skill shots deciding the winner instead of strategy/teamwork.

I don't play LoL or DotA, so I can't comment on any supposed skill differences between the two. The fact is, though, for a game to reach the level of popularity required to actually be officially considered alongside the MLB, etc., it has to appeal to the non-hardcore gamers. I have tried to watch a few DotA2 matches, and I think "DGAF" was what was running through my mind for most of it. I don't have/want to take the time to learn an overly complicated game, and neither do most people (a large part of those are potentially incapable of it as well). On the other hand, I have watched a number of LoL matches and can understand/enjoy what's going on, even as a non-player, and without having to treat it as a masters program in video game knowledge.scorch- wrote:COD : Counter-Strike/Quake :: LoL : DotA

pretty much this, im definitely not downing dota in anyway, i have played dota as i said it was just overbarring at first and i couldnt curve it as i dont have the time to put into a game that requires it.crawtona wrote:I don't play LoL or DotA, so I can't comment on any supposed skill differences between the two.
