Re: LCS - "sport"
The funny thing is that they're the exact same game on the surface. The things that make dota better are things that you couldn't even recognize until you actually played the games. So maybe you're just drawn to cartoony graphics or happen to like the LCS broadcasters or something?crawtona wrote:I don't play LoL or DotA, so I can't comment on any supposed skill differences between the two. The fact is, though, for a game to reach the level of popularity required to actually be officially considered alongside the MLB, etc., it has to appeal to the non-hardcore gamers. I have tried to watch a few DotA2 matches, and I think "DGAF" was what was running through my mind for most of it. I don't have/want to take the time to learn an overly complicated game, and neither do most people (a large part of those are potentially incapable of it as well). On the other hand, I have watched a number of LoL matches and can understand/enjoy what's going on, even as a non-player, and without having to treat it as a masters program in video game knowledge.scorch- wrote:COD : Counter-Strike/Quake :: LoL : DotA
That is why I'm equating LoL and CoD. Since you only play LoL and not DotA, it's not worth writing out all the different reasons, but suffice it to say that the game designers have a game structure in mind, they build items and heroes to support that game structure, and players are forced to play along with that structure if they want to win.
LoL is the easiest game in its genre. It's a game for people who want to play an fps-style game with skill shots deciding the winner instead of strategy/teamwork.

I don't think I've watched a LoL match with a shoutcast, tbh. Maybe the problem is that I watched the DotA matches with one, and I really had no idea what they were talking about (terminology, etc). It also just seemed a bit slower paced, I guess. Though that probably has to do with not understanding the strategies and such (are the maps bigger? I feel like they were for some reason). I definitely saw the resemblance between the two; you're right, simple gameplay-wise they looked almost the same.scorch- wrote:The funny thing is that they're the exact same game on the surface. Like I alluded to, I've never played DotA and have played a very minimal amount of LoL, so I might be talking out of my ass, but that's just the impression I got.

i was about to write a detailed post explaining why league is so much worse,
but league is just a joke compared to dota.
its like comparing futsal to actually football. Sure, it takes some skill but its void of any real strategy/teamwork.

the irony is dota players are the only one who cares for my game better than your bs. they are different games just get over it. league is more successful because RIOT took the time and research to figure out what kind of game would suit an e-sports world.

LoL is easy to get into, easy to become decent, but hard to become a top player. Which is one of the reasons its become so popular, that and the fact that it's free and isn't too hardware intensive.
