I know there was a thread that was about this exact subject a while back. I didn't read all of this thread so forgive me if im repeating another persons veiws.

I think scorch hit it right on the dot as far as games that are made to be competetive.

I still think the big problem is that companies do not produce games to be competetive. They produce games that allow the weekend warrior to play and still have fun no matter of the skill of players in the server.

Take Call of duty for example. Call of duty has gone to a once very bataish CS style game to a game that rewards you for dying multiple times in a row. Kill streaks, weapon advancements, rankings, death streaks, perk pakages are all made to lower the skill cieling in the game.

The ammount of people that play call of duty once a week far outwieghs the people that are willing to learn the physics, weapons, cone of fire, aiming etc that would play competetivley. Because of I think game dev's have found a way to keep the average person focused on loging on once a week and that is the more the play the better they will get no matter of the play style.

In conclusion I think competetive gaming is dead because the market is for the millions that enjoy playing games just to play them and not to the few who chose to master and minipulate them.

Hope I made sense.

I think I remember that thread too. I'm pretty sure it was around April.

scorch- wrote:There are so many things about DoD's gameplay that make it the best team fps game. The competitive mode (domination) is just the most natural team/war-game mode... frag to control the map, get points for controlling the map. The weapon aim/recoil system offers very subtle balancing features... if they removed the damn cone of fire and used recoil and damage to balance the weapons instead, it would be a ridiculously good system. I mean, the beauty of the recoil system is that you can make a heavy a "short-medium range" weapon by forcing the player to use a high sensitivity to control the recoil and make their aim naturally less accurate at long range. You don't *need* a cone of fire to do that for you. The gun can shoot 100% straight if you balance the recoil and damage properly. The movement system where you can shoot while counter-strafing adds a huge skill ceiling to the game, but I really think the penalty for movement should be huge recoil (or delayed bolt) instead of randomness.

I liked counter-strike a lot, but I think DoD is a better game for the same reason that futbol > football. CS is a game of executing very specific plays. Experience plays a role later in rounds, but a lot of rounds are won and lost by flashbangs and headshots to start the round. DoD requires your team to have a strong overarching strategy and experience executing that strategy including map- and situation-specific tactics. The free-flowing nature of the game rewards teams where every player understands the game much more than cs where you need 1-2 strat/decision-makers who understand the game and 2-3 players who need to be able to just headshot. You don't win a map in dod on one round, you win it on hundreds (or thousands) of opportunities to make good decisions and nice shots.
What a nerd.

FPS is dead because it's the same games that did well reskined with another number on the cover every year. There needs to be a new fresh game to revive the competitive scene.

I have to agree with a lot of posts about dod. the movement, speed and style of gameplay puts games these days to shame.

I was always partial to the Unreal Tournaments and TFC (team fortress classic) myself. The new TF blows. You could see the skill gap when playing those. I never played official matches but between friends and clans I was in we played plenty of scrims. not to mention a few years back when Unreal Black Edition came out for a free weekend I didn't seem to lose touch rolling the new kids in FFA and the game felt like it did back in the the 2002 days. I forget which was my favorite, 02 or 03 or something. whichever was before the laser sniper rifle.
