ROMs are modified versions of the OS, whether built from stock Android source or based off the source code provided by the phone's manufacturer. Various tweaks/enhancements/features are added/stripped to provide better performance. Each ROM is different based on those changes and the color scheme given. There's a hell of a lot more customization available with Android than iOS.

While a jab at Jason.. it's a pretty poor one to make. Those who don't keep up with technology are often being phased out in the workplace. Technology will evolve quicker and quicker as time goes on, and keeping up with it is in everyone's interest.
