think about it...if this attracts old school DoD players who haven't been around for a while, do you really think a majority of them would be all for the idea of going to this lan to play with a bunch of people they have never played with before? or would they want to make a team with all of their old buddies they've played with, or haven't played with in forever, and have fun with them.

I'd definitely play DRUGS on LAN

I don't think you'll ever have to worry about that. No matter how much you "play like a try hard," you'll never be good enough to be picked up by a top contender.
Playing DRUGS on LAN would be fun.

A BYE would be more challenging.

If there was going to be a big prize purse, it wouldn't come from people paying for the event, it would come from donations/sponsors.
The idea is to not be in the situation where we have to be pushing to get as many people to register/pay for the event so that it can even take place/have prizes. The idea is to spend a lot of time and energy securing funds, sponsors, and prizes ahead of time as to entice more people to attend. I see that as really the only way to get a larger chunk of past-players to want to attend such an event.
The way you go about trying to plan a small, lan-center oriented event for 5-6 teams is totally different than if you are trying to organize a large, self-hosted event.
Right now I'm toying around an idea of more of a hybrid, and trying to figure out how much it would cost us to host a non-byoc, self-hosted event, with 24 sponsored tournament computers (or just 12 even), with a small cash prize purse (in addition to other prizes).
I'm over the idea of doing a byoc. The cost goes up exponentially and people have to worry about trying to get their computers across the country, not just themselves.
If we can get to a point where we know how much an event like this would cost (24 tourney pc's, small prize purse, good location, etc), then we can move forward with raising the funds to actually make it happen.
All of that work will be done before any kind of announcement is made about an event (this could take a while).
The last thing we need is another ChiLAN situation.

i find it exceedingly hard to believe someone will be on a team without at least 1 other person they know on there team in a pug system. the people who show up for DoD LANs tend to be the people who have been playing this game for a while.
the pug system to me sounds interesting. random pool selection, no captains. that way the chances of a stacked pug team are lower, and its a virtual guarantee of fairness in regards to team formation. if you are worried about the prize pot in a DoD lan, your priorities in life are a little ****, sorry.
honestly i see the best way for this to happen is to make it a LAN with another game. perhaps sc2 or 1.6 and DoD. if you have it in Vegas, and get a sc2/CS 1.6 LAN involved you might be able to get EG to get you some help with the sponsorship stuff. the EG house is in PHX(yes its sc2, but scoots lives in phx) and they have a lot of pull with companies in regards to sponsoring things. its not like it would be hard for them to help with a sc2 LAN that they can almost guarantee one of there players wins for a 6 hour drive. excellent PR for them, low travel costs, and most likely very limited foreign interest in a small US tournament with a small cash pot for the winner.
plus, you could get DR to possibly get involved on his end if you bring sc2 into it - if hes still doing that shit with the gaming industry.
