Old Demos

I have a whole bunch of old (around 2004-2006) demos on an old hard drive, but when I try to play them through DoD it tells me that I have the wrong "Protocol Version." Does anybody have any ideas on how to play these?

How many do you have, we could probably use them for The Archives.

Lots... a couple of GB worth. My first persons for everything from around my time in dicE (just prior to Winter CPL '04), all of my x6 demos, up through LATELATELATE (Summer? 2007)

Complexity demo player worked for everything (so far). Also it turns out I have almost 9GB worth over 3 years...!

I believe using the "playdemo" command rather than "viewdemo" allows demos from older protocol versions to be viewed. I can only really verify this for demos as old as 2006 though. Just something to try if the complexity player doesn't work with some of your demos.

you have both options with the col demo player so that should be enough

Maybe that's a older version of dod
Version 1.0 (May 1, 2003)†
Version 1.1 (November 14, 2003)‡
Version 1.2 (May 19, 2004)
Version 1.3 (July 7, 2004)
complexity demo players works to bypass the protocal issue. For the older ones you need to install a old version of dod if I'm not mistaken. No idea how that works with steam and/or if they still can be found somewhere.
