I had my most expensive ($100 buy-in) and longest running (7th season w/ same 8) fantasy draft yesterday down in temecula, CA. 10/12 of us got together for it. I had the 11th pick out of 12 in a snake draft. We also run a half point per reception, and start QB RB/RB WR/WR TE FLEX K DEF/ST with 7 bench spots. 6 pts per passing TD. We also do waivers by a money bidding system instead of the traditional waiver order. Everything else is pretty standard. I want to say before hand that i mocked a lot and did NOT like this draft spot. I would have preferred the #1 pick, or somewhere in the 4-7 range. But this is what mine looks like.
Round 1 (
11th):
STEVEN JACKSON RB, Falcons - I was committed to RB/RB with my first 2 picks, and 9 of the first 10 picks ahead of me were running backs. there was nobody i really liked there at #11. Alfred Morris was there, but i refused to pick him. I am just not a fan or a believer. but jackson is poised for a big year. turner, as bad as he has looked in the past 3 seasons, has never scored less than 10 TDs in that offense. Jackson is in shape and will stay on the field on 3rd down, which is something turner never did.
Round 2 (
14th):
FRANK GORE RB, 49rs - in a half ppr league, gore is not a bad pick here. Health issues are a concern for me but he produces well when he's on the field and catches a lot of passes. and without crabtree, you know they will get off the bus running the ball
Round 3 (
35th):
RANDALL COBB WR, Packers - Without jennings, he is going to get a LOT more looks in the passing game and he will get touches out of the backfield too. Perfectly happy with having him as my WR1. Rodgers is going to throw for 40 TDs and 5000 yards, and someone has to catch them and he is easily the best WR of the group.
Round 4 (
38th):
MARQUES COLSTON WR, Saints - I planned on going hard on running backs this draft, and most of my mocks had me taking a RB in the 4th (or even with my 3rd pick, and i followed up with the best WR available), but i just didnt like ANY of the running backs at this 38th spot. Every player in this league knows what they are doing and a i knew a lot of them would be heavy on running backs. I also know i already shored up my 2 starting running backs already, and it is a half ppr, so i went with another WR from a 40td/5k passing yard offense with colston. Just from a pure volume standpoint, with brees routinely throwing it 40-45 times a game, he is going to get a ton of balls and he's the #1 red zone target. he's a lock for 1200 yards and 9 TDs imo, and could put up a lot more more.
Round 5 (
59th):
STEVE SMITH WR, Panthers - I wasn't going to go WR here, so this is a bit of a reach, but there is a reason. the 12th pick, who has 2 picks in a row after my pick, went RB/RB/RB/QB so i knew for a fact he would be going for a WR after my rnd 5 pick. He would most definitely would have got Steve Smith also. So i grabbed smith ahead of him, knowing that he would not take any of the running backs off the board that i wanted, even though i was targeting a RB with my 5th pick. He is a pretty consistent producer and cam newton is only getting better as a passer which will only benefit smith.
Round 6 (
62nd):
CHRIS IVORY RB, Jets - Ivory is pretty good value here in my opinion. He is a starter on a team with a horrible passing game and a rookie QB starting. They also have 3 first round picks on the O line and they are a very good at run blocking. Ivory is also a talented runner. I think he will get a lot of touches and have a lot of opportunities. To have a starting running back at my flex (or have the option to be steve smith there) is pretty good imo.
Round 7 (
83rd):
TAVON AUSTIN WR, Rams - very talented and electric player. he is a slot WR and he will be sliding right into the spot left by danny amendola who went to the pats. and amendola was far and away their #1 option in that offense.
Round 8 (
86th):
RUSSELL WILSON QB, Seahawks - I was practicing a WAIT ON QB strategy. I was getting guys like romo in the 8th or 9th, which is excellent value. Hate all you want on him and his ability to win in the playoffs or his horrible untimely interceptions, but the guy puts up fantasy numbers and has quite a few very good and elite weapons there. BUT, romo went before my 83rd pick and wilson slipped down. I like running with wilson as my QB if i can get him in the 8th. The guy runs the ball too which is an added bonus. Also, when the guy gets percy harvin back and sidney rice gets healthy, he has a ton of weapons to work with as well as a really strong run game.
Round 9 and beyond is the point where i started drafting fliers and handcuffs... It is also the point where my memory starts getting blurry because i was drinking since before round 1. But, i will leave the final results down below.
QB - Russell Wilson
RB - Steven Jackson
RB - Frank Gore
WR - Randall Cobb
WR - Marques Colston
TE - Greg Olson
FLEX - Steve Smith
K - Blair Walsh
D/ST - Denver Broncos
BN - Chris Ivory
BN - Tavon Austin
BN - Bernard Pierce
BN - Jaquizz Rodgers
BN - Alshon Jeffery
BN - Kendall Hunter
BN - Josh Freeman
I didn't like the 11th pick, but i feel like i was able to get a very well rounded team. No glaring needs, but nobody at 1 position that is super elite because i picked so low in the 1st and went RB/RB. I had to wait until the the end of the 3rd to get my first WR but once again, i got 2 guys that were solid at the WR position. Getting my QB that late was a steal as well.
We used ESPN and i found this in my e-mail after the draft
I'm not sure how accurate that can be at this point, but i believe i did have one of the better drafts of the group. If any of you participated in an ESPN draft, post your report card. It should be in your ESPN e-mail inbox.
I have 2 more drafts ($50 and $75) both this wednesday night @ 7pm lol. I don't know if that is going to be confusing, but we'll see. I will post results to those drafts wednesday night.
