There would be several battles like this going on each week, I think 3 or 4 each week. There was a ranking system, medals, promotions etc. There always needed to be some sort of officer in each server on both sides, and the officers would nominate who would get non-stat based medals.
I'm pretty sure it was only once a week, but maybe we played in it at different times. You are correct your team was either Axis or Allies.
I played in like 2001. For an entire week you'd have 3-4 battles going on for different countries. Like I said, if Italy was contested there would be a server going on Anzio for the entire week, France would be on Caen etc.
Yeah we never did stock maps. We always played on the largest maps you could find in DOD. I didn't play until like 2003 or 2004, so I guess some things changed since 2001.

Quite possibly the most fun I've ever had playing DoD was in BFE games. I played allies campaign except for once or twice? Played 5 or 6 of them. When I played it was one map every saturday for 12ish hours or something. Either way, fun killing loads of people and they would stick it out. Both sides always had heavy hitters though so it always evened itself out. Played against Netherhell SO MANY **** TIMES.

It varied from like 12v12 to 16v16 during the peak, depending on player turnout. Battles were on Wednesdays and Saturdays for 12 hours, each side had 2 or 3 armies so there were multiple servers and maps being played. Yeah officers would do promotions and medals after each battle. I played from BFE6 to the end of BFE (24?) and then played some Source in the follow up tournament, Victory in Europe (ViE).

Yeah as much as I've enjoyed matches, I still remember having way more fun in BFE. They were fairly good about balance, although once campaign (BFE 9) had an Axis army that was ungodly stacked, with some of the best competitive players combined with all the 12 hour playing nerds. Netherhell might have had the highest K:D in the history of that tournament, having a 16 player team with guys who run in a straight line and look at the ground when they prime a grenade was great for sniping.

I remember playing against a bunch of Vp in those. I also had a shitton of medals from the 3 campaigns I played. It was super fun, and I don't remember a lot of picked lineups, it was always just people trying to get into the servers. A constant rotation of people eager to take part in the craziest organized pub ever. If only we still had the pubbers to do another one.

All these nostalgia threads make me feel old as ****.

I think a revival of BFE would be absolutely fun. Too bad there isn't enough of a community for something of that scale anymore...

Vp started as a group of people who knew each other IRL in Georgia, then ballooned from recruiting a ton of people from BFE.

Sitting in the reinforcements channel on ts2 waiting for the call that you were going on the server next, bfe was a right laugh.
